10 Ways for Kids to Give Back

It’s no secret that I am a sensitive soul… an empath… a HSP. As such, I have some trouble when folks start talking about all of their random acts of kindness during the holiday season. It’s not that I don’t want to hear about kindness, I love to hear stories of love and selflessness. The thing is… what about the other eleven months of the year?

There are people in need 365 days a year.

Wouldn’t it be a wonderful world if, instead of posting RAKs all over Facebook in December, everyone was kind every single day, all year long?

What a wonderful world it would be.

One of my most favorite quotes is this one by William Wordsworth:

The best portion of a good man’s life: his little, nameless unremembered acts of kindness and love.

I’m happy to share other people’s ideas for acts of kindness, or to spread the word about an important cause, but I don’t share our family’s random acts of kindness on FB or on this site because it feels disingenuous to me. Our family strives to practice kindness toward others all year long.

But last year, Leo surprised me with a kindness-infused blog post. We had been working on finding appropriate community service opportunities and the fact that he chose to write about kindness touched my heart in a way that I cannot adequately describe in words. Instead of trying to do so, I’m going to share that post with you today.

10 Ways for Kids to Give Back During the Holidays and Every Day by Leo (age 6)

Hi.

This is Leo. I’m going to share my Top Ten Ways for Kids to Give Back. This morning I was working on my Faith Formation book with my mom and I thought of a great idea. I wanted to write a blog post about community service for kids because I’ve been doing more service this year. It’s My first top ten list.

Top Ten Ways for Kids to Give Back

  1. DONATE! There are probably a lot of toys and books in your house that you don’t use. You can donate books, toys, and clothes to children and families in need! Last weekend I donated a toy to Toys for Tots for my friend’s birthday. You could also adopt a child or a family and give them gifts. This year we got lots of stuff for a 10 year old boy and we helped pick out the stuff. You could also donate supplies to a family moving into a home for the first time. We are doing that for our preschool.
  2. WRITE A LETTER TO A SOLDIER! Last weekend and last Christmas we made cards for soldiers overseas, and soldiers who just got back home. Be sure to say thank you!!
  3. SURPRISE A FAMILY MEMBER!  You could surprise your brother or sister by cleaning up their room. You could make a card for them and sneak it under their door. You could surprise your mom by putting your laundry away without her asking you. ETC.
  4. MAKE SOMEONE LAUGH! I love jokes. You could tell someone a joke and make them laugh! You could write a silly note or draw a silly picture to make someone laugh.Image may be NSFW.

  5. VISIT A NURSING HOME! Tomorrow I’m going to a nursing home for a Christmas concert. I might play Jingle Bells or Jolly Old St. Nicholas but I might not play the piano because I’m nervous.
  6. MAKE A HOMEMADE GIFT FOR PEOPLE! I always make gifts for my family and friends. Here are some ideas: cookies, books, fairy doors, Christmas ornaments, cards, ETC.
  7. MAKE COOKIES TO DONATE! Today, we are going to make cookies for a cookie drive that we always do with our church. It’s fun because you get to decorate so many cookies, eat a few of them, and then make lots of people happy.
  8. PICK UP LITTER! When we hike and we see litter, we pick it up to help the Earth. The Earth has too much trash and we should pick it up to make it better for people and animals.
  9. VOLUNTEER TO READ! Yesterday, I read a book called Rudolph Shines Again to my sister’s class. The kids loved it and I want to do it again very soon.
  10. LEAVE A LOVE NOTE! You can leave love notes as surprises for your mom or dad or your sister and brother, or friends. You can say, “I love you!” and fill their buckets.Image may be NSFW.
