Today, in honor of Valentine’s Day, I’d like to share this older post with an added update. I believe in this cause and I am proud of how my sweet girl decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
Remember when I talked about that Wordsworth quote on kindness that I love? Well, I have always loved the idea of nameless acts of kindness and love. We’ve been trying to teach our children that it is these nameless acts that are the most important. The best kindnesses are the acts that you perform solely out of love and desire to help, the ones you do not tell anyone about. You do them just because, and you don’t care if anyone knows what you said or what you did. As a family, we try to practice this type of kindness but sometimes, in the process, you learn about someone or something that is worth sharing because the sharing may spread more kindness. Does that make sense?
Today I am going to share something that T and I did this week because it involves an organization that I think more people should know about. We made a hair donation.

Hair donation: Be sure to do your research
Many, many years ago, I chopped my hair and I donated it to a well-known organization so that it could be used to make wigs for children who were battling cancer. In my mind, this organization provided the hair pieces to any child who needed one (not just cancer) and that the wigs would be provided for free. I later learned that this is not always the case. Often, the hair you donate to the place I used is sold at market value. Moreover, the hair pieces go only to children with cancer and not children who lost their hair for other reasons. And, get this… these kids’ parents have to pay for the wigs.

Children With Hair Loss (CWHL): A Cause Worth Sharing
Well, T and I chopped our hair this week and, after much research, we are sending the locks to Children With Hair Loss (CWHL). The hairpieces made by CWHL are made by their own staff and the hairpieces are provided for free to any child with a medically-related hair loss (read: cancer and beyond). The minimum donation length is 8 inches. You can either visit their website or “like” them on Facebook to learn more about how you can donate.

| T’s locks were too short to donate but she was SO excited about helping that I didn’t tell her we couldn’t use them. Shhh! She is so happy and is already looking forward to her next donation. |
Update: Valentine’s Day 2016:
I’m happy to report that our sweet T chose to chop her hair as an act of Valentine’s Day love. We are once again donating to Children With Hair Loss, a cause we believe in.
