Compass Rose Activity

Understanding directions can be tricky for young kids. An easy way to help young children understand directionality is by making your very own compass rose.

My children are huge fans of any project that involves coloring, and so it occurred to me that I could draw a simple compass rose, make some photocopies, and then discuss the concept of north, south, east, and west with them while we all colored!

Simple Compass Rose Activity

There are plenty of compass rose printables on the internet, but if you are in a pinch and you’re okay with CaitArt (remember, it’s not ClipArt!), you can print the one that we used here.

1. Print the compass rose.
2. Discuss directionality as you decorate! For some great books, click here. 
   
3. Laminate for durability.
4. If you wish, you can hang the drawing in your child’s bedroom or playroom. We put our compass roses in the kids’ bedrooms. I love to hang up activities that we are working on, so that we can casually review concepts just before bedtime.
